I​n daily life, we develop numerous desires, attachments, habits and dependencies. Once these attachments, habits, needs and dependencies take root within us, we feel as if we simply cannot carry on living without them. Yet if we pause to reflect: before these habits and needs were formed, we got along perfectly well without them. It was as though such things had nothing whatsoever to do with us, was it not? Therefore, as Buddhist practitioners, we need to establish a wise understanding anew, and consciously nurture wholesome, sound, positive and constructive states of mind and habits.

People nowadays are fond of mobile phones and cannot live without them. Is it because you love the device itself, or because you have built up an inner psychological dependence on it that makes you unable to let go? Which factor carries greater weight? I believe hardly anyone would claim they love the physical phone. More often than not, it arises from this mental attachment we have cultivated. Likewise, all worldly people’s clinging to and craving for wealth, social status, poetry, books, music and painting, and everything else in life, are in truth all cultivated tendencies of the mind.
